Evolution Review

The first all women’s pay per view is in the books, and it was a success!  A card full of great matches, and a crowd that was into every match, made for a fun night.  A lot of legends of the past, the women of the present and even the future of women’s wrestling were all on display last night.  Although my predictions were not as accurate as I had hoped, I like a surprise and the women last night surprised me with what they could do.  A great opening with Nita Strauss playing the guitar better than most people can even dream about.  It was also great to see Beth Phoenix on commentary.  We also saw Lilian Garcia as a ring announcer for a couple matches.  That was before the matches even started.  So let’s get into the matches.

Trish & Lita still got it

Trish Stratus and Lita had a tag team match with Mickie James and Alicia Fox with the injured Alexa Bliss in their corner.  A pretty good match that went back and forth, but it was the hall of famers that picked up the win last night.  We were able to see all the classic moves from Trish and Lita, plus see them pick up a win.  A great way to start the show.

Women’s Battle Royal

The women’s battle royal was everything as advertised.  It was great to see all the women in the match get an entrance.  It was great to see the legends like Ivory, Molly Holly, Michelle McCool, Torrie Wilson, Maria Kanellis, Kelly Kelly, and Alundra Blaze.  This was a hard one to pick.  I would have liked to see Carmella win it, because she is moving up the popularity list very quick.  I had a feeling she wouldn’t win, and I played it safe with the pick of Asuka.  Asuka had a good showing, but it was not as good as Ember Moon and Nia Jax who were the last two in the match.  Nia eventually picked up the win and earned herself a shot at the RAW women’s championship.

The Riott Squad vs Sasha Banks, Bayley and Natalya

A decent six woman tag match that had the Riott Squad in control for most of the match.  This was probably my least favorite match of the night.  It was also the match that I was looking forward to the least.  So my thoughts on the match were already there before the match started.  I was hoping they would change my mind, but they didn’t .  Sasha, Bayley and Natalya won as predicted.

Mae Young Classic Final

Toni Storm went one on one with Io Shirai with the winner being crowned the Mae Young Classic tournament winner.  In my opinion this was the best match of the night.  The women went back and forth displaying moves that you don’t typically see women do.  Io Shirai has one of the smoothest ariel move sets I have seen in a long time.  Toni Storm has a great look, with a great finisher.  A finisher that she needed to hit twice to get the win.  It will be interesting to see where these women go in their career.  I personally hope to see more from Toni Storm.

NXT Women’s championship match

Shayna Baszler got her rematch for the NXT women’s championship against current champion Kairi Sane.  I am not a fan of Kairi’s pirate character.  I like her and the moves she displays, especially the flying elbow finisher.  It is just hard to buy a princess pirate as a champion.  Shayna Baszler on the other hand… she is a bonified bad ass, and a very believable champion.  Shayna was able to get some assistance from her friends in the match and eventually defeat Sane to regain the championship.  I don’t believe the assistance was needed, but it adds to the heel character that is Shayna Baszler.

Smackdown Women’s championship

First, let me get this off my chest.  Why?  Why was this match not the main event?  I get that WWE wants Rousey to be the face of the Women’s division, but I think long time hardcore fans like myself, are feeling a little forced to like Rousey.  Becky Lynch and Charlotte has had the biggest rivalry on the main roster for months.  We saw two, maybe three weeks of Nikki and Rousey build.  Another classic example of Smackdown champions not getting the love that RAW champions do, but I digress.

The last woman standing match for the Smackdown women’s championship did not disappoint.  I saw these two women do things that some men probably will not do.  The match was brutal, but in a good way.  Becky and Charlotte beat the ever-living out of each other.  Bumps on tables, ladders and chairs.  Leaps from ladders through tables, chair shots that hurt me to watch and a finish of a powerbomb from the second rope through a table on the floor!  Charlotte was not able to get to her feet before the ten count after that.  Becky won the match fair and square and although we didn’t see the double turn like I had hoped, the writers planted seeds of a legit Becky baby face.  Becky is loved by the crowd, and no matter who she is up against, she will be cheered.  A great match that went close to thirty minutes.  Well done, ladies, well done!

gohomepwb.com pick:  Charlotte  Winner Becky Lynch (PPV prediction record: 11-5)

Rousey still undefeated

Another match from Rousey that made her look super strong.  After all that is the point right?  I was really hoping for Nikki Bella to win this match, although I know it would have been a major upset.  In my mind I had a plan as to how this would play out.  It was a stretch, but I was really hoping we would see a Baszler run in to cost Rousey the title.  But it was not the case and as predicted, although not by me, Rousey picked up the win in an ok match.  I was a little concerned with Nikki Bella’s neck as it looked at some point during the match that it was really bothering her.  But she was able to finish the match.  Rousey is still champion, but I wish she would develope her own character.  The Roddy Piper rip off, although blessed by Piper, is aggravating me.  Piper was a heel, probably the best ever!  If she is going to do it, do it as a heel, do it justice.  Rant over.

gohomepwb.com pick: Nikki Bella  Winner: Ronda Rousey (PPV prediction record 11-6)

A historic night that didn’t disappoint on the wrestling.  The women brought it last night, really telling the men at Crown Jewel to “follow that.”  Crown Jewel will take place this Friday at noon.  And it WILL take place in Saudi Arabia.  However, WWE is still not promoting the location of the event on TV or on the pay per view last night.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out, as a couple of wrestlers have said they will not go to Saudi Arabia, including John Cena and Daniel Bryan.  Both who are playing major roles in the event.  I guess we will have to stay tuned to WWE to see how this plays out.  Also Friday morning, I will give my prediction for Crown Jewel, be sure to check it out.

I hope that Evolution was as enjoyable for you as it was me, and I know I can’t wait to see what happens on RAW tonight.  Check out gohomepwb.com tomorrow for my RAW review.  Thanks for reading!
