Will A Women’s Match Main Event WrestleMania?

Women’s wrestling has never been hotter than it is in the WWE right now.  From “The Baddest Woman on the Planet” Ronda Rousey, Charlotte and “The Man” Becky Lynch, to the up and comers in NXT like Kairi Sane, Bianca Belair and Shayna Bazler, the WWE is absolutely stacked with woman wrestlers.

Week after week, the women are showcased in great matches.  They main event RAW or Smackdown on almost a weekly basis these day.  Ten years ago this was unheard of, even five years ago, you wouldn’t see a women’s match close a show.  Prior to the women’s revolution, the only match in the past ten to fifteen years that I can recall main eventing was Trish vs Lita.

Todays women wrestlers open the show, they close the show and in recent months have been the majority of the show.  Long gone are the days of mud wrestling, swimsuit contest and bra and panty matches.  If you subscribe to the WWE network, check out a few Monday Night RAW’s from 1998, 1999 or 2000.  Some of the segments the women were in are down right degrading.

The women in WWE have come a long way since walking around in revealing bras, thongs and mini skirts that were basically cloth belts.  Now they produce five-star matches and provide fans with entertainment that will be remembered for years to come.  As far as women’s wrestling has come, is now the time for the women to main event WrestleMania?

My personal opinion…YES!  YES! YES!  Do I think it’s going to happen?  If I had to bet a dollar I would say no, unfortunately.  Don’t worry, I am going to get into why I think it’s not going to happen.  I do think WWE will bill it as a double main event, but that’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one.  A main event is the last match on the card, period.

Match placement on WWE pay per views have been a puzzlers over the past year anyways.  What I think would be a main event match, ends up second or third on the card.  I wouldn’t be totally surprised if Becky Lynch vs Ronda Rousey is the third or fourth match on the card.

Odds are it will be the second to last match right before Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins. Which is one reason why I think WWE will be calling it a “co-main event.”  With that said, I am ready to defend my “no”.  I have three big reasons as to why I think the women will not “legit” main event WrestleMania.

Reason number one: Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar is Vince McMahon’s go to.  It’s no secret Vince McMahon believes that his top wrestlers have to be “larger than life”.  He likes the big muscular looking guys to be his top champion.  And as much as we have seen Vince bend over backwards for Lesnar, I wouldn’t be surprised if WrestleMania is headlined by Brock Lesnar once again.

Brock Lesnar is an attraction, and in this case that is playing to his favor when it comes to the last match at WrestleMania.  People want to see Brock Lesnar, and they will sit through a near eight-hour pay per view to do it.  He has been Universal champion for basically two years and fans are tired of it.  People are ready to see “the beast” conquered and I think it will happen at WrestleMania this year.

Reason number two: Tradition

This year will mark the thirty-fifth annual WrestleMania.  And in all previous thirty-four WrestleMania’s there has never been a women’s main event. Tradition has always been in WWE anyways, that the biggest match with the most meaning will go on last.  I think that Vince believes that is Lesnar/Rollins.

Think about it…how many times have you heard that the Universal title or WWE title referred to as the most prestiges title in the company?  I have yet to hear anyone say that the RAW women’s championship or the Smackdown women’s championship is.  I think tradition will be a factor in deciding the last match at WrestleMania.

Reason number three:  Becky Lynch will not beat Ronda Rousey

Whoops!  Spoiler alert!  My third and probably biggest reason the women won’t main event is that I truly believe Rousey wins this match.  If the WWE learned anything from last years main event debacle, hopefully it’s to send the fans home happy.  Last year the fans booed Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar out of the building.  They didn’t want either one of them to win.

Fast forward ten months and Becky Lynch is all of a sudden the hottest wrestler in the world.  I have a feeling that the powers that be are not ready to cool off Ronda Rousey.  And to be real honest with you, I don’t think they are completely behind Becky.  I know they would rather see Charlotte getting the reactions that Becky gets.  Or even better, they would like to see Rousey get Becky Lynch type reactions.

Charlotte and Ronda Rousey are recognizable names to people outside of the wrestling world, especially Rousey.  So from a business stand point it only makes sence to have one of them represent your women’s division.  Or even better… both.  It will be interesting to see what unfolds as far as the Becky, Charlotte and Rousey storyline goes.

Hopefully, this made sense.  In a nutshell, I want to see Becky and Ronda main event WrestleMania, but I see a few obstacles in their way.  If everything falls into place and they build this story the right way, it could and should be the last match.  But unless, there are plans to turn Ronda heel or have Becky win… no way this match goes on last.

Let me know what you think, is Ronda Rousey vs Becky Lynch really going to main event WrestleMania?  Could we see a triple threat between Rousey, Lynch and Charlotte?  Could there be a fatal four way with the addition of Asuka, and unify the Women’s championship?  There is a lot of wrestling left before WrestleMania and it’s slowly but surely starting to get interesting.

As always thanks for checking out GoHomePWB.com, the people’s wrestling blog!
