One could hope that with Summer Slam just two months away, the WWE would start building towards it with interesting storylines. I feel like they are trying to start the build, and if this past weeks RAW and Smackdown were any indication of the direction of programing this summer, then I personally will enjoy it.
But Summer Slam is in August, lets talk about June’s pay per view called Stomping Grounds. Not sure what’s up with the name, but it gives the WWE a reason to be a little more edgier by using the ‘ass’ word on television. Kicking ass and taking names has been the motto for this pay per view, and I think we are in for a good pay per view that may live up to the motto.
With that said, hopefully we are in for a few surprises. My prediction record stands at 83-42, so as you can tell WWE has been somewhat predictable over the past year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few smoz finishes Sunday, building to rivalries that will pay off at Summer Slam. With that said, lets take a look at the card and make some match predictions.
Xavier Woods & Big E vs Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn
Two members of the New Day will do battle against best friends Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Owens and Zayn have not had the best of luck in recent weeks, but I think that changes at Stomping Grounds. I look for Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn to find a way to win, but certainly not in a noble fashion.
Ryan’s Pick: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
Cruiserweight Championship Match
Current champion Tony Nese will put the title on the line in at triple threat match against Akira Tozawa and Drew Gulak. Nese won the championship at WrestleMania and has been a good representative of the title and the brand. But I look for the title to change hands at Stomping Grounds, and for Drew Gulak to become the new cruiserweight champion.
Ryan’s Pick: Drew Gulak
Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match
Current champions Daniel Bryan and Rowan will put the titles on the line against Otis and Tucker of Heavy Machinery. I like the team of Heavy Machinery and if you have followed this blog, you know I am a fan of traditional tag teams as champions. I would love to see Heavy Machinery win this match, but I don’t think it will happen … yet. I fully expect Daniel Bryan and Rowan to retain, but I think the WWE should get the tag titles off of Bryan and Rowan soon and Bryan should focus on singles competition.
Ryan’s Pick: Daniel Bryan and Rowan
United States Championship Match
Samoa Joe was given back the United States championship from Rey Mysterio after Mysterio was injured and unable to defend the championship. Sunday Joe will put the title on the line against a modern day Rey Mysterio, Ricochet. I think this will be a great match, but I don’t think Ricochet wins. I think it would be better if this story built for a while with a pay off match at Summer Slam. I like Samoa Joe to retain.
Ryan’s Pick: Samoa Joe
Smackdown Women’s Championship Match
Alexa Bliss will most likely have Nikki Cross in her corner, when she takes on Bayley for the Smackdown women’s championship. I personally would like to see Alexa become champion again, but I think there will be a different direction for her. I think Alexa comes close to winning, but a mistake by Nikki Cross will distract her and Bayley will capitalize and retain the championship. This will progress the storyline between Alexa and Nikki Cross. And I’d like to see Sasha Banks return and go after Bayley and her title.
Ryan’s Pick: Bayley
Roman Reigns versus Drew McIntyre
In a rivalry that goes back to before WrestleMania, Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre will once again do battle. I am not sure on this one who will win, right off the top of my head I immediately think Reigns. Shane McMahon, Elias and The Revival could all play a part in the match which makes me think Drew McIntyre may find a way to win.
Ryan’s Pick: Drew McIntyre
RAW Women’s Championship Match
I am a big fan of Lacey Evans, and I would really like to see her win this match. I may get hate for saying this, but I think Becky Lynch is overrated and I think it would better for her to not have the title. And that’s why my upset pick for the pay per view is for Lacey Evans to win her first championship.
Ryan’s Pick: Lacey Evans
WWE Championship Match
Kofi Kingston will put his WWE championship on the line against my favorite wrestler, Dolph Ziggler. Not only is it a title match, it’s a title match in a steel cage. Now, all signs point to Kingston winning and retaining the championship. As much as I would like to see Ziggler win, let’s face it he has more losses than wins in his career. But Ziggler is someone that could generate a lot of heat from fans and maybe it’s time to put the title one him. He has certainly paid his dues, and if he does win, I think the crowd would probably pop. My heart says Ziggler, and this may be even more of an upset than Evans over Lynch, but I will pick Ziggler in another upset.
Ryan’s Pick: Dolph Ziggler
Universal Championship Match
Baron Corbin will take on Seth Rollins for the Universal championship. The question in this one is, who will be the special guest referee picked by Corbin. Every time Corbin announces a referee, Rollins attacks that person. I have no idea who the referee will be, but I like Seth Rollins to win and retain, regardless of the referee.
Ryan’s Pick: Seth Rollins
The picks are in, and hopefully it’s and entertaining and unpredictable pay per view. I hope that WWE builds on their product after a decent Monday Night RAW and Smackdown Live. I will have a Stomping Grounds review/results post on Monday, be sure to check it out. And as always thanks for checking out GoHomePWB.com, the people’s wrestling blog!
