WWE’s biggest event of the summer took place from Toronto, Ontario Canada last night. A tough act to follow after NXT tore the house down on Saturday, the main roster was not to be out done. It was a long night of matches with seven championships on the line. A good card and a lot to discuss, so lets get into it.

Cruiserweight Championship Match

Per the normal card line up, the cruiserweight championship was on the line in the first match of the kickoff show. The current champion Drew Gulak put his title on the line against a game Oney Larcan. After a very physical match with some stiff striking, it was Gulak that was able to get the better of Larcan and win and retain the title.

Apollo Crews versus Apollo Crews

An impromptu match that was not on the card at the time of my predictions page, Apollo Crews took on Buddy Murphy. This was Buddy Murphy’s first match as a Smackdown superstar. The match was actually going great, but before we had a clear winner, Rowan came out of nowhere and attacked Buddy Murphy. Apparently Rowan did not care for Buddy Murphy bringing up his name as the one who attacked Roman Reigns.

Edge Spears Elias

Elias came out to the ring to do one of his songs and during his bit he had a lot of derogatory things to say about Toronto. Then… “YOU THINK YOU KNOW ME”, Edge comes out to a “Road Warrior pop”. He then went to the ring and I think everyone thought he was going to verbally destroy Elias, but instead … Spear!!

Women’s Tag Team Championship Match

Another match that I was not aware was going to be on the card was Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross defending their newly one tag team championships against The IIconics. A pretty good match that was quick, but entertaining. Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross were able to get the better of the “IIconic” duo and retain their titles.

RAW Women’s Championship Match

Summerslam officially began with the RAW women’s championship on the line. “The Man” Becky Lynch put her championship on the line against Canadian Natalya. The crowd was split, much to my surprise, as I expected the crowd to be firmly behind Natalya. This was a good match, with submission rules, I went on a limb and took Natalya to win the match, but that was not to be the case as Becky Lynch was able to get Natalya to tap out to the arm bar.

Dolph Ziggler versus Goldberg

Dolph Ziggler came out first and cut a scathing promo on Goldberg. Before Ziggler could finish, Goldberg’s music hit and he made his way to the ring. Ziggler was able to get a couple of super kicks in, but to no one’s surprise Goldberg kicked out and hit a spear and jackhammer for the quick win.

Ziggler wasn’t finished however, after the match he took the mic and had some not so pleasant things to say to Goldberg. Goldberg returned to the ring and hit Ziggler with not one, but two more spears. An entertaining end to the match that will hopefully get the bad Goldberg taste out of the mouth of fans.

United States Championship Match

AJ Styles put his United States title on the line against former two time champion Ricochet. This match was a little slower than I expected, but it didn’t take away from the match. They told a great story in the ring, with Ricochet selling a leg injury. After a lengthy match it was Styles that was able to pick up the win after he reversed a mid air maneuver from Ricochet into the Styles Clash.

Smackdown Women’s Championship Match

For the first time in her career Ember Moon got a shot to challenge for the Smackdown women’s championship held by Bayley. The crowd didn’t seem to into this match, but both women had a good outing. After a somewhat lengthy match, it was Bayley who was able to hit a “Bayley to belly” off the top rope for the win and my one hundredth correct pick.

Ryan’s Pick: Bayley Winner: Bayley (Overall prediction record (100-55)

Shane McMahon versus Kevin Owens

If Kevin Owens was to lose this match, he would have to quit WWE. Shane McMahon tried everything in his power to make that happen, including having Elias at ringside as the special guest enforcer. It was all for not, for McMahon as Owens was able to overcome and get the win after a stunner, foiling my “Toronto screw job” theory.

Charlotte Flair versus Trish Stratus

Charlotte Flair was more than up to the task to take on Toronto’s own, Trish Stratus in what is being billed as Trish’s last match. After a lengthy back and forth match, it was Charlotte that got the better of Trish, making her tap to the figure eight. For some reason I changed my pick at the last minute to Trish Stratus, when I know WWE never lets the person retiring win their last match. Nonetheless it was great match!

WWE Championship Match

The Viper Randy Orton was the challenger for Kofi Kingston and his WWE championship. A rivalry that has been renewed from nearly a decade ago, a lot of people think that Orton is overdue for another title reign. This was a long match that went back and forth, before Randy Orton hit an RKO out of nowhere. Kofi rolled to the outside to the floor right in front of his wife and kids.

Orton tried to embarrass Kofi in front of his family, and Kofi went crazy with a kendo stick. Kofi ended up getting booed in Toronto after the act. I think it’s safe to say that Kofi-Mania has run it’s coarse. The match ended in a double count out with no clear winner. It looks as if this feud may continue.

Finn Balor versus Bray Wyatt

Finn Balor had the unenviable task of taking on “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt. Bray Wyatt’s entrance was absolutely incredible and his in ring performance was not to be out done. He basically dominated over Balor until Balor had a slight flurry of offense. It was only a matter of time before Wyatt was able to lock in the mandible claw for the win.

Universal Championship Match

The reigning, defending, undisputed heavyweight Universal champion, Brock Lesnar put his title on the line against Seth Rollins. Rollins guaranteed a victory, but I was skeptical and picked Lesnar to win. As for the majority of the weekend I was wrong. Rollins was able to overcome and win the match and regain the Universal championship.

A pretty good weekend of wrestling between NXT and WWE, pretty much all the matches were really good. Summerslam was a long night, not WrestleMania long, but long. The matches didn’t go the way I predicted and that’s a good thing. I went six correct and nine incorrect. Hopefully that’s a sign that booking in WWE has changed.

It was good to see Edge return and actually hit a spear, and I was really entertained by Dolph Ziggler even in a loss. I can say I honestly enjoyed Summerslam and am looking forward to RAW tonight. Thanks for checking out GoHomePWB.com, the people’s wrestling blog!
